The Basics

What is Internet Licensing?

The latest versions of RCS software products are able to renew your database and product licenses via the Internet. This service eliminates both the need for you to call RCS to get licensing codes and to type licensing codes in the software. The service is available any time of day or night anywhere in the world. You may license your databases from your workplace or from home - anywhere there is a reliable Internet connection.

What kind of internet connection do I need?

Any type of internet connection is fine, including telephone dial-up accounts or broadband (DSL, cable modem or LAN). RCS Internet Licensing works with most firewall configurations because it uses the same protocol as regular web pages (HTTP). If you have a dial-up modem, you can dial in to connect to the Internet, update your licenses, then disconnect. Usually the licensing process takes less than 60 seconds, though it depends on how many items you need to license.

Do I need to pay extra for this service?

No. This technology improves the support RCS makes available to you and is part of our ongoing services to you. Your obligation shall be to use the service responsibly (e.g. not sharing your licensing credentials and licensing only when necessary).

Once I begin to use Internet Licensing, can I still call you for a license update?

Of course. Internet Licensing is just an additional means of managing your product licenses. However once you see the ease and convenience by which you can renew your licenses via Internet Licensing, you will likely never choose to call us to license if you don't have to.

How It Works

What do I need to Internet License?

First, you must be using RCS products that support Internet Licensing. Older RCS software, like Selector version 12.43a or Master Control DOS do not support Internet Licensing.

Second, your station's account must not be delinquent. Clients not in good standing may at times be required to call RCS Accounting to obtain licensing codes until their accounting issues are resolved. RCS ensures your security by monitoring the service to detect abuse and tampering. Users who RCS finds abusing the service in any manner will forfeit privileges to use the system.

How do I license my computers using the Internet?

Before you can license your databases and workstations using RCS Internet Licensing, you must get an RCS User ID or Internet Licensing ID (ILID), depending on which product you have. Selector/Linker software uses ILIDs. All other products use RCS User IDs.

For ILIDs, you will need to get a different ILID for each computer you wish to connect to the Internet Licensing service. To get your RCS User ID, click here. To get an Internet Licensing ID, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your ILID is NOT the same as the RCS User ID you use to log in to Data Exchange or the RCS Web site. Using your ILID instead of your RCS User ID will result in denied access.

Once you have your User ID or ILID, you will enter it into the RCS software, where it will be stored for future use. From then on, you may renew your software licenses at any time with a single mouse click in the software.

After your initial setup, a single click will license ALL the product databases and workstations seen from your computer. No further intervention from RCS will be required unless special attention is required. (such as you get a new computer, your hard drive crashes, your call letters change, etc.)

My databases are stored centrally on the network. If I use one computer to Internet License will the other computers be able to access the databases?

Yes. Internet Licensing replaces the phone call to RCS for license renewals, so the net result is the same as if you had called us.

I have a database from a sister station. Will I be able to license that using Internet Licensing?

Assuming the other station grants permission to you to license the data and that they have a contract to use our software, we can support this. Written permission may be required from the other station. Circumstances vary, so please contact RCS support for assistance.

Privacy and Security

Why am I required to license my data and update the licensing periodically?

Licensing your database ensures that only the parties whom you and RCS agree upon can access the databases for RCS products. This protects the intellectual property of your database, format, clocks, songs, etc. and the intellectual property of RCS software. RCS security technology protects your data and our software from unauthorized use, and flexible design now allows us to provide this security to you using the Internet.

I only want certain people in my company to license our RCS product databases. How is this controlled?

The way you control whether someone gets into a particular database or not is with Database Security, not Internet Licensing. If you require that only certain people can license a database, we suggest that you don't use Internet Licensing. If you wish, we can mark your account to disallow anyone from setting up Internet Licensing. Removing this restriction would require written permission from someone in authority.

How secure is Internet Licensing? If someone learns or guesses my Internet Licenser ID will they be able to license a copy of my database?

No. RCS takes the security of your intellectual property very seriously. For that reason, Internet Licensing is highly secure. If someone learns your RCS User ID or your ILID, they will not be able to license your data. However you should take precautions to protect and your Password. Failure to do so may compromise the security. Also, be sure to use a strong password that would be hard to guess (e.g. using upper and lower case latters, numbers and special characters.

To maintain confidentiality of your intellectual property, your computer will only be allowed to license databases with the call letters of your station, so other users of Internet Licensing cannot license your database nor can you license theirs.

What sort of information does RCS collect from my computer? Can RCS see the files in my computer? Can RCS see what is in my databases?

The RCS Privacy Policy discloses the nature of all information RCS gathers during such transactions as Internet Licensing. In general, during Internet Licensing RCS will see how many databases you have on your computer, their names and call letters, plus the seed code(s). All of this information is necessary to create the license key and to create or extend your software license. To augment the information on file which we use to better support you in the future, we log the free memory, operating system and file system version of your computer. This is only used to help discover the cause, should you experience any problems. We occasionally view these details in aggregate form to compile statistics on customers' operating systems and usage of Internet Licensing. None of this information is ever disclosed with any third parties, in strict accordance with the tenets of our Privacy Policy. None of this is "personally identifying" information. You can find a link to the RCS Privacy Policy on the bottom of this page.

Please note that absolutely none of the contents, songs, rule settings or other information contained in your databases is transmitted to RCS via the internet at any time via Internet Licensing. RCS cannot and does not read or detect any other files, cookies, registry settings or any "personally identifying" information from a computer during Internet Licensing.

Also note that Internet Licensing is done only on demand from your computer. RCS cannot and shall not detect any information about your databases or computer without your initiation of the licensing process.

All Internet Licensing transactions are logged and audited to prevent abuse and tampering.

When my consulting firm sends me a database, I have to change the call letters to my station's call letters before I use it. Can Internet Licensing do that too?

No, not at this time. You will still need to contact an RCS Support person to change the call letters of a database.

We took on Aquira as a beta client and have been impressed by the user-friendliness of the programme. It has a number of functions that make it easy to learn, with great reporting facilities and the ability to roll out schedules to multiple stations easily.
